Sanding...how much do I need to do!!!
Ok I am goin to rattle can a side mirror on my DD 96 Firebird. The other mirror busted and i needed to find another one ASAP. I found one and its silver and i need to paint it black. As the title says how much do i need to sand down the mirror before i apply my filler primer? Do i need to take it down to the plastic? or only enough to scuff the surface? I intend to start with 180 and then 400 grit sandpaper. After I apply the my 3 or so coats of primer do i let it sit over night and then sand with 400 again and rinse off before i start my color coat?
I know rattle canning is looked down on but its my DD car and im not too concerned about it. Any help on time frames between sanding and painted as well as just rinsing off after sanding would be appreciated. Thanks
Dustin

you just need to sand it until the shine is gone... paint will not stick to unsanded clear so as long as it does not have a shine you will be fine! sand it with 180 first but you will have a hard time getting 180 scratches out with 400... if you are going to prime it 3 or 4 coats of primer will cover 180 scratches and let that dry over night... then sand the primer with 400 and apply your color and you should be fine!!

So your sayin not even both with 400 before the primer?
And I guess i dont need to sand between color and clear right?

if your going to prime it then it doesnt matter weather or not your going to go through the clear as long as the surface is sanded and there are no shiney spots. i guarentee with 400 ull burn the edges. if your not going to prime it i recommend some sort of sealer to hide the old color and start fresh. if you prime it will cover up to 220 scratches and put like 2 to 4 coats of primer then wetsand it with 400 and finish with 600 or 800 before applying sealer or basecoat.
