Aftermarket tach hookup?

Do you have to change the 8 cylinder hookup on a aftermarket tach to make it read correctly when using the factory tach output wire?

I had to change mine to 4cyl to read correctly, because the stock tach wire gives double the amp's, or whatever, worked for me!
