Without proper diagnostic tools it can be hard to tell if the car is just not tuned properly period. With diag equip, setting the MAF to fail and enter SD operation can reveal / isolate the MAF as a culprit.

Think of it as this- there are two airflow measurement systems, half splitting, taking one out of the equation can help isolate the problem.

The easy way to do it without tools (I would say a labscope) is if you are having an issue, try to find someone you can swap with. The MAF is really easy to swap out.
