Default Engine light on a 05 Malibu due to opened gas cap.

My wife forgot to close the gas cap after fueling up and now the engine light is on. The car is a 2005 Malibu. Is there a way to get that light off without taking it to the dealership?

Some of the big auto parts chains will scan codes for free. I can"t remember if Autozone is one of them.

I think that code will self reset if you just go through a few tanks of gas properly with the cap...tell her to drive it normally and not worry about the code...if it's still there after a few weeks, ask the guy at AutoZone to reset it for you.

It should go off itself after about a half dozen drive cycles, or you could go to AutoZone and have them reset it

The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail. A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
or you can clear it with a scan tool of some sort,
