Default class project on tuning, need some help please

ok well i have a presentation do to for my motorsports class and i need some info:

when you advance the timing in the computer waht really happens? what does it do?

dude check out www.howstuffworks.com "fuel injection, motor, etc"

they have some good basic tutorials with nice drawings.

Increasing the timing on the ecm makes the coilpacks fire earlier, before top dead center, increasing cylinder pressure, ideally when tuned right up to the peak power without causing detonation.

Thats a pretty crude description sorry. Read howstuffworks and you'll totally understand the basics of the engine, timing, spark, strokes, etc.
