Default LS computer compatibility

Iv got a model year 98 camaro and Im pretty sure my ECM is toast. Im in search of a replacment but remember something about not being able to use a non 98 ECM with a 98 instrument cluster. Maybe its just you cant swap IC from year to year. Anyone know what Im refering to? I can steal a ECM out of a few friends F-bodies but want to make sure Im not gonna fry their unit by using it on my car. Thanks

98 has to have a pcm from a 98. You can re-pin the whole harness and run a 99+ pcm but its not plug n play. I have a 98 pcm that I will sell if you are looking to buy one.
