Default cam tuning

ok so i have been reading for a few days now. my question is i installed a cam and long tube headers and bought a hp tuner and i need a starting point to atleast get car to run on its own i have read a bunch about ve mapping and sd but is there something i should be doing first?

That is a rather broad question, but lets try to point you in the right direction.
First, do you have a wideband O2 sensor installed? IMHO that is essential.
What are the specs on your cam?
Does the car start and idle?
If not, the following HPT thread starts with a few changes to help get the engine to start:

Beyond that you should consider the Greg Banish Tuning DVD and/or his books.

The most critical part is getting the VE table and the MAF (if you have it) tuned. While you might get it approximate by careful examination of the Long Term Fuel Trims (LTFT) you really need a wideband O2 sensor. An AEM wideband gauge is about $175 and works well with HP Tuners.
