Default what is a wideband?

i probably sound like a tard but what is a wideband? what is it for? who does them? when do i need one?

most stock cars employ narrowband o2 sensors which read very accuratly at a 14.7:1 a/f mixture and help to keep your car running at that point under part throttle, they however are very inaccurate at any richer or leaner then that so arent good to use when trying to tune wot fueling, thats where wideband o2's come into play as they are highly accurate at pretty much any a/f ratio but are generally more expensive then narrowbands but even those prices have come down tons with bosch's sensor.
