408 with a stock pcm???
Over the winter I will be dropping in a solid roller 408. I have a 98 and was wondering if the stock pcm will work or should I get some kind of stand alone??

You'll be fine w/the stock PCM ... the stock PCM is alot better than many give it credit for. Really the biggest issue gest to be if you max the MAF out, which I've only seen occur on blown applications... and even then there are work arounds (I don't think there are any 2-3 bar SD packages for the 98s yet, but worst case you could do like Matt Harlan does and run twin MAFs average the signal... then you change the appropriate tables in the PCM)

worst case what some people have done is they've kept the stock PCM for spark and such and piggy backed a Megasquirt ontop for fueling (Megasquirt is a really inexpensive aftermarket solution if you are willing to put it together or pay to have someone do so) but the stock PCM is a very stout unit

Also the other limiting factor is if you plan to spin the engine past 8000 rpms. The stock PCM has no reference past that point, and I am not sure what it would take to add more rpms to the code. We will be staying with a stock PCM, but changing from the '98 version to the '99-'02 version (mainly a 2001 base file ).
