Default Clean wideband sensor??

I've had my LC1 for about 6k miles and have done the full tuning of my h/c/i setup. I had things apart yesterday to install a new clutch and saw that my wideband sensor looked pretty crudded up with carbon. Should or can I bother to clean the sensor?
Will the crud degrade the readings or shorten life?

If I should clean it, how should I do it?
