Default ls1 motor/trans/brake swap onto 69 bird

So I'm looking into buying a 69 firebird. My idea is to pull my motor and trans out of my camaro to swap into it. I'm sure this has been done before and was looking for some info on it. I'm sure I will have to make a custom crossmember for the trans and probably new motor mounts, but was wondering about if I will have to cut the trans tunnel.

I also was wondering if I could install ls1 spindles on it to use the front brakes, if not maybe I could get pointed in the right direction for someone who sells a big brake kit for it? As for the rear, anyone know if the rear is the same length as an ls1 rear? If so, maybe I could pull the ls1 axle tubes and have them pressed into the 69 center section for use of the rear ls1 rotors?

Also looking to get a set of 295/35/18's on zo6 wheels under it and 17x9.5's up front. Is this possible? I'm sure I will have to mini tub the rear but was wondering how much, I am not so sure how my luck will be on the front. Thanks

Im pretty sure there are companys out there that sell kits to swap the LS engines in those cars. I dont think youll have to cut the firewall. Check with year one.

Get over to Lateral-g.net or pro-touring.com There are more LS converted cars there than you can count. In fact, I'm building one. I keep a project journal on lat g and on hotrodders.com

http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/jour...ournalid=20939

Here's the link for reference, but don't think that my swap is what you have to do. I'm going a little above and beyond with my customization.

To answer your questions-

1- yes, this has been done many times, and will likely be for many years to come.

2- you can buy everything you would need to bolt in the engine to your car.

3- the spindles themselves won't work. the LS car is a front steer (with a rack n pinion) the first gen is a rear steer design. you can get all your brake parts at Kore 3.com. or, for a budget- read here:

http://www.pozziracing.com/12_corvet...es_on_fgen.htm

http://www.pro-touring.com/showthrea...p-on-68-Camaro

4- see above for rear brake info.

5- as for the wheels, yes, they can fit, but the car will need modification to make it work right.

example: I'm planning on 17 x 9.5 in the front of my car. I'm also notching my frame rails and rebuilding the inner fenders to accommodate more room as I wish to maintain full steering. Otherwise my steering would be limited and my wheels would stick out and lots of rubbing would happen. For the rear I mini tubbed my car.

If you don't mind the '70's look then you can stick the wide wheels in back, but if you wish to have them tucked in under the wheel opening, then you'll be mini tubbing.

DSE is a premium company for swaps like these. They make beautiful parts, but they aren't cheap. It all comes down to what you want to do, what you want to pay for, etc..

Good luck. Let me know if you need more help.
