Default Engine ID

Got an 02 WS6 black with quite a few mods done to it when I bought it. However, I have been trying to figure out which motor I have in it. I checked and the numbers read 12561584. If anybody can help me figure out if it's an LS1 or an LS6, I appreciate it.

That is not an engine block casting number, that is the part number stamped on your power steering bracket. Are you looking at this number? See picture.

http://m.modernhemi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1521074

Here is a list of engine casting numbers. The engine number is on the rear of the engine and is not easy to see, you may need a mirror.

This link tells you where to find the engine casting number, unfortunatly the linked pictures are no longer there but it tells you how and where to find it.

It's not on a bracket it's on the front corner of the block on the drivers side. The number is right above a "bullseye" stamp.

Ok, I just went out to the garage and I see what you mean. It doesn't look like the black peice in the picture I linked to, but it is still the power steering bracket, not the block, look closely, that part is bolted to the block and on mine is the same silver color as the block. There is a little bullseye with 02 in the center to the left. 12561584 is the part number for the power steering mount and only looks like it is on the block.

That is the bracket that your power steering is mounted to, not the block, the block numbers are on the rear of the engine and not visible from the front.

12561584 is not an engine number. If it were a LS6 block the number is 12561166, or 12559378 if it's a '02 LS1. Look at the Summit Racing link.

What numbers are on the heads? Look on the passenger side under the oil filler and on the side of the head, or on the drivers side behind the power steering, but that isn't as easy to see. You should see a 3 digit number.

There is no sure way to identify your engine number except to look at the casting number on the REAR of the block.

Went outside to check and still couldn't find the casting number but the number on the heads is 241 and was easily visible. Need a mirror or a jack or ramps to get a look at the rear of the block. Wanting to know what block I have to get parts that will fit with the motor and what not. Thanks for the help.

A mirror is your best bet to see the casting. However you don't have to worry much about part specifications as most items will fit LS1/LS6/LS2 and in some cases L3/LS7. The LSx system is very swap friendly. For example, you can drop LS7 lifters in an LS1 using LS2 trays no problem.

241's are LS1 heads so its very possible (almost sure) that you have LS1. I think I remember reading somewhere about the bulls-eye on the block indicating if it was a LS1 block or a LS6 block, can anybody confirm this? What mods does the car already have? Like said above, parts between LSx engines can easily be swapped. Build a LS1 with a LS6 oil pump and heads, LS2 timing chain, LS7 lifters, a good cam and you have well above 400hp.

If you have a phone with a video camara on it you can stick your hand back there and take a video of the block number. That's how I did mine.

Can't fit my arms back there to fit my phone in there. The car overall came with 3.90's, cammed, bored, chipped, true duels, 3000 stall, 3 piston z06 brakes, LS6 block. This is what the owner before me claims and I haven't been able to confirm the block yet. Some other minor things (performance plugs and wiring). Trying to figure out what the motor already has done to it so I know what I need to do myself.

AMN, welcome to LS1tech! SEARCH will be your best friend here.

Why don't you tell us more about this car? What year? Auto or stick? Original engine?

Bought the car in April 2012. It's a black 2002 WS6 auto. Replaced shocks, hub assembly, pinion seal, exhaust (need to get a new exhaust again because I got rear ended and hit an armadillo), water pump, thermostat, rack and pin, rebuilt the motor and trans as well. I'm about to replace the drivers side headlight assembly, rear side marker on drivers side, and put BBK coated longtube headers on it. Saving for a 9in rear, and the list goes on. I'm pretty irritated that the owner before me neglected the car as bad as he did. But life goes on and my wallet gets thinner.

I hope you didn't pay too much for this car.

It sounds like you still have the original engine block, 12561168 or 12559378, according to the list posted by ghardester. Used in Camaro, Firebird, Corvette & Caddy CTSV LS1 & 6 (-68) and Camaro, Firebird & GTO LS1 (-78).
