Default Dealer premium : 4 new cheap tires and a detail?

In my search for the right 01-02 WS6 Trans am I have come across some nice dealer cars ranging from less 10k miles to a little over 50k...1 or 2 owner cars. They look good extensively detailed and almost always with new tires which are often low end $100 tires. It seems like they are on average asking $5k more or so than the equivalent private party car that may need some detailing and new treads. I'd rather clean up the car myself and put on some decent tires. Anyway just wondering if others are buying nice cars from a dealer and if so what have they experienced as far as how much they come off asking price. I figure there is some room for negotiation but not upwards to the 5k range....hence the price differences between dealer and private party. I've never had any luck with used cars from a dealer.

Back in the day it was easier to get some money knocked off the price. I remember being able to get print outs of ads for similar cars at other dealerships and taking them with me to the one that I really wanted. I could just tell them that I had other options, but would rather work with them if they would work with me. That usually did the trick. Now-a-days these cars are getting few and far between to find at dealerships and they know it. Your best bet is to print off multiple car values (KBB, edmunds, NADA, etc) and negotiate from there. I always shoot for a fair price that is between retail and private party value.

If I was looking at a performance car, and they put **** tires on it, I'd ding them on the price for it just as much as I would if the tires needed replacing... cuz either way, they're not gonna work.

That's the problem with dealerships. Not only retail pricing but they mask the flaws on the car with cheap fixes, whether it be crappy Chinese tires or slabbing the interior with heavy doses of detailer, and of course those fantastic vacuumed carpets. Not only do you have to get past all the cosmetics but you have to work your butt off to get the car for a decent price. It's not easy. It's like 2 strikes against you before you ever get in the batter's box.
Of course there are exceptions, but you really have to search.
