At 30k it doesn't really *need* a change, unless it was operated under severe conditions. It wouldn't hurt to do though, since the car is new to you and you don't really know the history. I don't typically worry about this until 50k miles for a normal driver, assuming you were to do a complete fluid change. If you're just doing a pan drop and refill, then every 25-30k is probably better since you're not getting all of the fluid out at any one time. If you are racing the car, that's a totally different story and changes may need to be more often. What is the apparent condition of the fluid on the dipstick (clean, dirty, burned, etc.)?

^^ Nailed it as usual.
When I owned a G-body and needed some minor tranny work, I asked the shop owner about my T/A and he said if the fluid is nice and pink, with no heavy severe driving, don't even think about a fluid change until 50k miles.

I got mine with 71K and the fluid smells like it needs changed, so looking into a cooler and best filter option.

As stated...look at and smell the fluid to know your needs

Bright red and clear = good to go. Orangeish with suspended blackish particulates - change it.
