I have a '98 T/A with automatic transmission and 170,000 miles. The release button on the side of the shift handle is getting so hard to push in that I can hardly get it out of park any more. Is this an adjustment, a repair, or what ? Thanks.

Had to replace the shifter handle on my '97 V-6 Auto. Button started coming out too far. Not hard to replace. Can't remember all the steps but there is a little keeper that is under the button side, it's U shaped and you just pry it out with little screwdriver or similar tool. The button that the shifter button pushes DOWN to shift gears (you'll see after you remove the handle) has a plastic end. Don't keep forcing the button for long or you break something harder to fix. Replace the handle.
