Wow, how nice of them
Was GM seriously gonna say, "We're shutting you down guys down, but you can't close your doors until we say so...after that have fun out on your ***."
I'm sure they would say something about a contract saying the dealerships have to stay open until the said date, but let's get real. It's similar to the "accepted rule" that you're supposed to give two weeks notice when you quit a job, but they don't have to give you any notice to fire you.
