Overfilling by how much? A little over is not going to hurt it, but if it's filled to the level of the reverse light switch, there will be problems. I posted the procedure with the Holden service manual instructions and you should follow them.

I know. I used the correct procedure years ago when working under the car. Looking at top filling as Svede mentioned above.
