WTB: 05 or 06 GTO
my truck is starting to show its age. i am trying to decide on whether to trade it in for a new truck, or just keep it for winter and get a used GTO.
i'd figure it would be cheaper for me to keep the truck and get a used GTO. i have driven my best friend's father's 04 GTO and loved it.
what do i need to look out for? any issues or anything i should be aware of?
it is hard to find used ones in NY state

I would say go with the 04. As a lot of people said if you want to pay 5 extra grand for 50 horse then go for it. compare that to 5 extra grand in after market parts.... but it's up to you.. can't go wrong either way. actually thinking about it... the other guys should know about what to look for. my baby still waiting for me in the garage at home. good luck.

...you want to pay 5 extra grand for 50 horse...
you pay 5k for:
1- 364-inch LS2's 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque and a lot of improvements from the LS1 is readily apparent compared to the LS1's 350/365 power rating
2- Ram Air style hood
3- Dual and separate exaust with 4" chome tips
4- '05's bigger 12.6-inch front brakes are a huge improvement over the '04's 11.7-inch front rotors
5- Electronic throttle control is smoother and more precise than the throttle-cable LS1
6- Power lock button in center console (06)
7- A revised traction-control system has no throttle "kick-back" and allows more wheel slip before intervening
9- Improved Rear facia bumper looks
10- The driveshaft, ring-and-pinion, and CV joints were strengthened to better handle the LS2's power
11- Wheelhop, which was a serious problem on '04 models, has been reduced significantly for '05 GTOs
12 -Improved style on the rear lights
13- Better traiding value due to the LS2 engine
14- More fun to drive due to the 50HP and MORE Torque (Priceless)
As you can see is not only 50 HP is a little more.

so what your saying is a couple more buttons is worth five more grand, lol
just kidding i would get the ls2 if i where you, only real diff. i care about are the brakes and engine, the rest is just crap, whats the point of the hood if it dosen't work. and unless your car is black or blue why the hell whould you want the tail lights. and the traction control from your disc. sounds like it works better on the 04.
and why care about resale value once you own this puppy it aint leavin until you kill it....

Outside of the driveline strengthening and bushing improvements (VERY good thing BTW), everything else is mostly personal preference and does diddly for performance....well, except for that motor change.
It really comes down to personal preference (the cosmetics and your goals). The economics are obvious.
i always wanted a Maggie and the LS2 heat soak....perpetuated by a Maggie....didn't sit well with me. However, the LS2 LOVES n2o. Alot.
But, if having a power door lock button gets you hot then by all means....

I don't have a Goat but looking now so take this as that... I only want to get an 05-06 because I want the LS2, and I only be doing headers and exhaust (possible a cam), I want dual exhaust out back, and I like the hood. According to Pontiac the hood is "functional"... it brings fresh air into the engine bay for "enhanced cooling".
I didn't know the brakes were bigger but that's just another plus for me. Sorry but no 04 for me.

I am not going to kid you, bigger breaks would be nice! But that doesnt mean i cant add them. The LS2 is a bruiser stock, but mildly modded Ls1's can run them down. The bodies on the 05-06's are definitely more aggressive, but I love a sleeper. The thing I read repeatedly on this and other threads that makes me LAUGH is the reference to RESALE VALUE... I'm a manager at a dealership, I see the "real" (auction reports) trade values to the cars. For the 5G difference your going to pay upfront... you will see $1,500-1,800 come back in trading. Fact of the matter is that the cars "we all love" are very soft on the market. The 04's have already leveled out. Thats the smart money if resale is a major factor to you, if not then my suggestion is to Drive them both and weigh your pocket book :->

a mild 400.00 cam (say a LPE GT2-3) +25/30 rwhp and,
a 200.00 CAI +5 rwhp and,
a 100.00 P&P TB +5 rwhp and,
some colder 40.00 NGK TR6s +0 rwhp and,
a 250.00 dyno tune +15-20 rwhp and,
say 300.00 for install.
so for say $1,250 u would get at around 50+ rwhp (or more) and can run WITH them (not down).
i can see it. can you?

i can see the sides of both. i guess it all comes down to is what is the best deal that someone can offer me, for the year and the mileage. i loved modding my Z71, i am sure i would love to do the same thing to the GTO. thanks for all the opinions.

I had an 06 M6 and it was moded to the hilt as far as bolt ons go, and now I have an 04 A4 and as far as a few extra buttons I have not noticed any differance in base line power between the two. All of my friends have 05+ and even with the few mods I have now (drop in k&n, slp lm1 catback) I have no problem keeping up with them. Now I have noticed that some 04 after market parts are a little more expensive. I guess do to the 04 being a single year run.
Either way you go you will enjoy.

It was sarcasm.
