Default TH400 problem.. Help please, I'd like to go racing tomorrow.

Just finnished putting everything together and fired up the car. Put it in reverse, N, 1,2,3. The car is on a hoist. The wheels don't turn unless I press the trans break for a split second... they spin for a few seconds and then come to a stop. There is lots but not too much trans fluid in the tranny. I don't understand. When I put it in reverse the tires rotate forward. when it is in N 1,2,3 the tires also rotate forward then stop (only when I hit the trans break for a second.) IT is a TCI TH400 with a break. I also have a trans cooler mounted up front if it matters. The shifter seems to be changing the gears properly because I can hear it clicking inside the tranny when I have the car off and change gears. the converter is bolted up and seems to be working fine. I am tottaly lost. i never touched the converter or trans while the engine was getting freshend'd up. I am at a total loss.. ANy ideas?

so the car goes forward just not in reverse?

some th400's with trans break use the trans break to engage reverse. you have to press and hold the button to go in reverse.

Sounds like maybe the Manual valve is not conected. Easy fix but pan has to come off to check and fix.

Sounds to me like you need to connect the manual valve like twofast said. Alot of th400's do require you to use N with trans brake to reverse but those wont rotate forward in reverse. Can you feel the trans shifting into the different gears? might want to set the car down and try

I thought that was just a power glide thing?

Depends on which brake you use. some do and some don't no matter what transmission

ya there is enough fluid in the trans and there is lots of fluid in the converter. I don't understand because the trans worked just fine when i took the engine out to get freshened up for the winter. I never touched the converter or the trans. SO the manual valve should still be connected shouldn't it? I don't know anything about transmissions. How would I know where to start. I know how to pull the pan but after that I'd just be guessing. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Ok different story.

So the trans and conveter never came out of the car or each other?

I am guessing broken pump as that is the most common thing that can happen when installing an engine. I hope I am wrong

Put a pressure gauge on it, and see if the pump is toast.

Took the tranny in today. They found that the linkage had come loose of the manual valve body. I have no idea how, because I didn't touch anything over the winter. So ya I ended up missing racing on sunday. (That's 2 races missed now) I guess I'm not going to win the points race this year. I watched him fix it so I know what to look for next time. Race cars are so ****** frustrating. When it rains it poors. Which leads me to beleive that now, the next race will probably be rained out with my luck.

Glad it is OK man.

VERY Odd the Manual valve coming off like that. I have never seen it happen after working fine.
