Default How do I know what kind of cam to put in my 383 stroker?

Im building a 383 stroker for my 84' el camino but i dont know how to choose the right cam. Im not sure of the lift and duration. I trying make anywhere from 405- 486 hp and sumwhere around 496 ft. lb of torque. I dont want a beefy cam cuz im not a fan of that super choppy sound, Im tryna look for a mild cam and I wanna run it on pump gas. Its going with my 650 cfm carburetor.

Where are you getting these crazy *** power numbers? Why not looking for 40-475? Something even? Doesnt make since. A cam hat makes power will have shop, if you dont like it get a honda civic and just keep wishing for power or use a turbo/nitrous.

And here is your response to the original post since you feel you need to make 2.

To make a good cam choice, you need to nail down these parameters...

1) Intended use of vehicle - more race or more street?
2) Actual compression ratio (measure it, don't go by the piston manufacturer).
3) Gas - pump or race?
4) Weight of vehicle?
5) Transmission and rear gears?

After you sort this out, call a reputable cam manufacturer. I think you can make 450HP. I wouldn't call this type of build "cheap" or "mild". What is your budget (don't say "as cheap as possible...set a realistic limit)?

You dont need to start another post if you dont get an answer.

Not to mention, you did not state weather you want a roller cam, flat tappet cam, mechanical or hydraulic, you need to give more information than:I want to make this oddball amount of horsepower and i dont want the nice lumpy idle that the rest of the world loves.
