Bore and stroke question for real sbc gearheads
Allright,can you bore a 283 the .125 in. it would take to get to 4.00? and, Can you turn a 3.48 (305-350) crank journals from 2.10 to 2.00 and make it work? If you can't bore it could it be resleeved to accept the bore? Just wondering I've got a good 283 and a 305 with a cracked block. Thanks for any help.

You could find a good 350 for a couple hundred bucks and buy a cast steel 3.75 crank(about 200$) to build a 383 or better yet an assembled shortblock for 1000$ to 1200$.The answer to your questions are no on the 4 bore and yes to the offset on the crank, but both are bad ideas,unless you got a forged crank already.

FYI: Some early 283's CAN be bored .125" over. Back in the day (late 50's - early 60's) before the 4.00" bore 327 came along it was found that some Vette 283 blocks could be safely bored .125" over creating what they called at the time a 301. I have an article from an early 60's Hot Rod where a guy took a .125" over 283 (4" bore) and whittled a 4" stroke crank from billet to make a 402cid small block.
BTW: You more than likely do not have one of these blocks. If you're into building your own then find a good used standard bore 010 (last 3 digits of block part number) 350 block and work from there with the 305 crank. This will work if you have an older 305 crank using 2 piece rear mains. If not, then you'll have to find a 86 (?) or later block.
