Default 327 Balancer replacement

Guys, I need some help please!
I have just replaced my balancer on my 327 with the same 6 1/4 inch one. I have taken it as far as it will go and it seems to be about 1/8 inch too far in i.e. not in line with the water pump pulley. I also do not remember taking off a bolt into the end of the crank. My questions are can I pull the balancer back out a bit or is there another way to deal with this or an explanation as to why this could happen and finally, should there be a bolt holding it on.

Your feedback would be great!
Peter

if it were me i would pull it back off and measure the length of the balancer from the back that goes inside of the timing chain cover to the front where the pully mounts to the balancer and compare it to the old one and see what you get, imo i would say it needs to be all the way in the balancer holds the botom timing chain gear from moving and there should be a bolt in the end of the crank holding the balancer in place

the 327 and the 283 engines didnt have a balancer bolt from the factory. alot of people drill and tap there crankshaft snout to put a bolt in,but its not supposed to be there.

Thanks for your comment. I think that you have solved the bolt problem. It definitely didn't have one before I striped it down and shows no signs on the old balancer that it had one.
Cheers
