Default Intermittant Flashing "Check Gauges"

I hope this is the right place to post this. My 98 camaro has started flashing "Check Gauges" on the dash. Everything seems to function properly, ie., oil pressure, coolant temperature etc..

Any ideas as to what is going on? At this point it is just an irritation but it would be good if someone that has been through this before could give me a little info. I searched but couldn't find reference to this particular problem.

Thanks

Thanks to both of you. The car doesn't get driven as much as it should. Do you have any recommendations for the alternator in terms of manufacturer? What should I measure when the alternator is running - 13.6?.

The gas level is at least half full.
