Default Push Button Start Question

Hey all,

Recently I've gone about doing the push button start for my 2000 Camaro SS A4. Car was working flawlessly prior to installation. I've .pdf'd the guide I used here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/92995448/C...h-Putton-Start. The only difference is I spliced the yellow starter wire to allow for both key and push button starts.

I completed all the wiring, triple checked it etc. When I go to turn the car over with the key for the first time to test, the engine cranks for a second or two then died. I smelled something kind of burning, inspected everything, checked everything, looked fine. I suspect maybe a fuse?

So I go to start the car over again with the key, again then the engine cranks for a second or two then dies. No burning smell since that first time. I then try to start the car with the push button starter - the engine cranks for a second or two then dies. Same thing.

I'm going to have a look over the wiring (again) and check the fuses again today, but other than that I am kind of befuddled.

Any insight?

I'd use a bigger guage than that, but that's just me. If you wired it correctly start with that. Check all grounds too. The thin wire could be the burning smell you speak of.

Thanks for the advice UnVMySS. I switched to 14 guage, re-did the grounds, and everything works flawlessly.

Thanks for the compliments. Got the switchplate from emblem pros, here. Got the S2000 starter on eBay. So total about $100 parts, did the labor myself in 4 hours or so of learning or whatnot. I have all the writeups .pdf'd if any of y'all are interested, PM me.

And I wired it so that the key still has to be in the ON postion, and I can start it either by turning the key to crank the ignition, or hit the I/O switch to activate the start button.

Nice job, cleanly done. But what is the point? You still have to insert the key and turn it to the run position. Is it really so inconvenient to turn the key one click farther to start? It strikes me as a gadget just for the sake of having a gadget.

did you follow these instructions exactly?

my car has a starter button installed (not a S2000 one, just a crappy one that the words are wearing off of. i plan to change it out), but my key switch will no longer work. you put the key in, turn it to the run position and then push the start button.

when i was installing a new clutch master i noticed that my yellow wire was cut like the instructions show.

it i reconnect the yellow wire from the push button to the key switch and then just tap into the yellow wire for the push button, will that allow both to function?

For show more than anything WhiteBird00, I like the way it looks. And I do find myself just turning the key the majority of the time, but I like the idea of the option.

And yes i'm sofa king, that would make sense. As I understand it, if you cut the yellow wire, you disable the option to simply start your car with the key. So by reconnecting the original yellow wire back to the key, and then splicing the push button starter in, you should be good to go. That's the way mine is wired.

I'm curious why going to 14 gauge wire would even make a difference. The pins that are on the start button are tiny.

Did you find out if it was more of a ground issue, then gauge of wire?

No problem i'm sofa king.

And Black_Z28, I did the 14 gauge re-wiring carefully...but my gut feeling is one of the grounds wasn't completely grounded for one reason or another.
