with headlights on, the dash lights go off . . . until I hit the brakes???

with headlights on, the dash lights go off . . . until I hit the brakes??? This has to be the oddest one yet, at night when I am driving with the headlights on, the dash lights (speedo, tach, guages) turn off. But when I hit the brake they work until I let off the brake. I do hear a slight "click" down by the center console when this happens?
I wouldnt even know where to begin to chase down this electrical gremlin
