Default ticking through speakers every time the cd changer timer changes

i installed XM radio in my car using a GM9-AUX adapter to convert RCA into something the headunit will play.

i noticed today that there is a faint ticking noise comming through the speakers, exactly one second apart. it isn't very loud at first but gradually gets worse and it is really annoying especially when songs get quiet.

we traced it down to the timer on the headunit. every time the cd changer timer clicks up to the next second it has a tick through the speakers.

what is broken and how do i fix it?

this is a 2001 headunit, replaced my old 1999 headunit which wouldn't work with the GM9-AUX.
