Has it always been like this or did it just start doing it? Have you made any recent changes to your car?

So it has never worked meaning either it is a bad shift light or it was hooked up wrong. I know its an auto meter but what series is it?

Make sure the shiftlight/tach is set up for 4-cylinder mode. Yes 4-cylinder! There's something with our ignition system that sends the tach signal in a form that is usually used in 4-cylinder engines. Do a seach for more accurate info on that if you'd like. Also make sure the hookups are correct. If the tach is working fine, and all that is wrong is the shiftlight staying on all the time, I'd bet that the light is wired to a constant 12v source instead of the tach signal. I'm not familiar with the workings of automerer though, but I assume that there is ground, +12v, and tach signal wires for the light, and perhaps you have the +12v and tach signal wires switched? I have a raptor shiftlight (set to 4-cylinder mode) on my 2002. Here's a good site to check for pictures of the proper wire hookups. The pictures are for a 98, but they also list the proper wires for different years. http://www.raptorperformance.com/chevrolet_camaro.htm

I hope this helps you some
Andrew
