Default Escort radar detector direct wire

I have the escort smartcord direct wire kit and after searching it looks like I can tap a wire coming off of the ASR or foglight switches. If I do this will the radar come on at ignition or accessory? I would prefer ignition so if its not beeping like crazy when I park near an automatic door. Also, which wire coming off the switch do I use(ie what color) and what gauge is it? Thanks!

All power to the fog light switch is headlight controlled and I'm sure you want to be able to use your detector without the headlights being on.

The pink wire at the ASR switch (TCS switch on Firebird) is the power supply and is hot in RUN only. You could also use the yellow wire in the black 10-pin connector in the back of the radio. It is hot in RUN, ACCY and when RAP is active.

I just did the same thing a couple weeks ago with my x50. I used these direction and got everything to work perfectly. The detector goes on when I start the car and goes off when I turn the car off. http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=14.

I think ill try the pink ASR wire. Do you know what guage it is? I can never tell the difference and I may need to buy some tap-ins. If I turn ASR off will it turn off the detector?

Dont know much about this stuff obviously

I belive it is 16 gauge but I'm not positive. If using a scotchlock connector, a red one will do the job fine. Using the ASR switch will not affect the detector because the pink wire is the power feed from the fuse box not the switch output.

Thanks all, that worked. I used the pink ASR wire and grounded to the radio screw. I had to cut off the tap-in plug that comes on the escort direct wire cord and use a tap-in from radio shack.
