Default 6x9's in the Rear hatch

I have a 99 camaro and was trying to fit a set of 6x9's in the old speaker holes in the rear hatch. The cut out the old speakers and was trying to fit them, only to discover that the speakers are too big for the opening.
i know a rookie mistake, excuse my ignorance. But can anyone recommend a way to install the speakers in the existing holes?

Thanks in advance.

Couldn't they just fit behind the opening?? Or are they too deep to allow the trim piece to sit back down?? I plan on putting a bigger speaker back there as well, but I still need to access everything back there first before I start cutting anything.

The 6x9s are too wide for the existing holes. I tried to fit them behind the existing holes but I dont think they will without some kind of bracket.
