Default sub box, lower well vs upper well

what do you guys think would sound cleaner if i were to run a single 12in sub? the lower well is more wide than it is deep and has 1.2 cubic feet sealed. the upper well is similar to the sub thump box but has 1.7 cubic feet sealed. i don't the system to "slam" but want it to sound "clean" for sound quality. i am looking towards a rockford p2 for a sub. any thoughts?

thanks,
nick

You need to pick the box that works best with whatever speaker you decide on.
If you want a "clean" sound I would find something other than a P2.

What is your budget on a sub?

i was gonna say the same about the p2. a good clean sub is an Image Dynamics IDQ12.

but yes, pick the box based on the needs. also, a larger sealed box will hit lower and a smaller one will hit tighter.

Gah I forget but is image dynamics the same group that does eD elemental designs? Their 13Ov2 is a nice 12 sub for small spaces.

If you place the sub box in the lower well area.. I think you will still get a lot of very nice reflections and have more angling options, vs using the upper well. Just make sure you sound deaden that whole well area and hatch door. It will help a ton. Make sure you get a solid amp too.

none of the boxes he listed are "small" for a 12"

but anyways -- no relation between eD and ID -- you're prob thinking of TC and how they used to make drivers for eD.

I know for a fact that the lower well box is going to sound better. Definitely more full sound and will hit lower. I had a 12" Rockford HE2 in an upper-well sealed box and a 10" HE2 in a lower-well box, same amp. The 10 was tighter AND hit lower in the lower-well box.

thanks man. actually someone came over and had a lower well box with a 10in P2. he said it also sounded more full than his old upper well box with 2 svc 10in... i guess this will be my next summer project before school.

That is completely wrong. As I said before, which box he chooses depends on which speaker he is going to buy. Every speaker will sound different in a different box.

Nickx07 - Pick your speaker first, then pick the box.
