Default symptoms of a bad wheel bearing/hub assembly?

i've had a knock/rattle from the front end for months now. i thought one of my koni's were going bad. my friend now thinks it's the wheel hub/assembly. $120 each side.
i can move the tire if i put my hands at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and shake it back and forth; i hear a little clunk. and i see the wheel move very slightly. drivers side does it more than passenger side. is that my problem?
thanx!
