Per Facebook comments from alleged witnesses, the incident happened during a meetup and dyno session at HP Motorsports in Katy, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Commenter Gavin Simcoe said, “We didn’t condone or let him take it down the road in any way. Plan was to Rev it up and show off. We couldn’t control that he threw it in gear and took off. We understand how this makes us look because of his actions but we have to push through this hope for the best.”
katycrash2According to law enforcement, the driver lost control of the car and hit a guardrail. He’s currently in stable condition, and it’s our sincere hope that he has a rapid and complete recovery. We would suspect that a factor compounding the severity of the injuries in this crash would be failure of the driver to belt in completely or wear a helmet or other personal protective gear.
While we can only speculate, few of us would be likely to don a helmet and five-point harness if we were just going to take a “quick spin” in a race car like this on a deserted street, so it’s understandable if the driver wasn’t properly protected. This crash is proof that things can quickly get out of hand, especially in uncontrolled environments outside the race track, and lives can change in an instant.
