Most of the time the PCM is not the issue on that. I have encountered this numerous times tuning 94 & 95 LT1 autos. We tried new pcm's and that did not fix problem. Threw back in the stock converter and that fixed it. Even changing shift points in the tune would not work. Good luck.

Can't you just keep lowering the shift point until it stops hitting? I've seen that problem with converter swaps on ls1's and it fixed the problem. The trans went on to last a long time afterwords too.

Coach described the problem to me yesterday, it is the OBD1 computer / high stall torque converter issue. What happens is the VSS signal jumps and then freezes (something in the PCM programming doesn't allow it to read correctly), and it forces the trans in to limp home mode via a soft shift to third gear. Been there, done that. I have Datamaster logs showing me going instantly (one data frame to the next) from 3mph to 140 mph, the VSS value locks at 140 MPH for several frames, then drops back down to 3 mph. Reset the PCM (pull fuse), everything works fine again, until you try to do a burnout or a hard launch.
For me, a swap to an OBD2 computer made the problem instantly go away (I had a Yank ST3500 converter in my LT1 car). So it's definitely not a transmission issue. But most won't have the option of going OBD2 unless they have LT1Edit for OBDII (had to 'make it compatible' with the !crank sensor, !rear O2's, etc).
Ed Wright does have a fix.
