Just metric hand tools and you may need to undo the fuel line it takes a tool that cost 15 bucks from auto parts store. To put them on you need a degree gauge to get bolt torque correct.

For a 1998 (obvious things omitted, like ratchets for the sockets):
Pliers (hose clamps on throttle body -or- separate throttle body from intake)
Fuel line disconnect tool (duh)
8mm 6-point socket (rockers, intake manifold)
10mm socket (valve covers, EGR valve, exhaust manifolds, AIR tubes)
15mm socket (water pump, head bolts, oil dipstick bracket, EGR valve, Y-pipe)
15mm open-end wrench (water pump, trans dipstick bracket if A4)
19mm wrench (coolant temp sensor, if removing)
8mm allen wrench (coolant blockoff plug in pass. head, if removing)
That should be everything, if my memory serves correctly
