Default Nevada DMV / Insurance question

Anyone here know how the Nevada DMV knows or who notifies DMV when insurance expires or lapses?

I had mine lapse for one month and got hit with $500 fine and they will suspend the registration until fine is paid.

What I'd like to know is if my insurance made the call to the DMV?

thanks,
jc

Pretty sure it's based on your vin number and insurance databases. I couldn't renew online because it said my insurance was expired from State Farm. That was the previous owners insurance but my insurance was still good I just sent them an email and it was cleared up. But they somehow know electronically and the vin is the only way to link an insurance database with a dmv database
