Default What cam limits for CA smog

Hi. I'm building up a 383 stroker for street/strip duty in my '99 Trans-Am. I think I'm going to get the AFR Mongoose street heads, FAST intake/throttle body and shorty headers. I'd like to get 400 RWHP out of the car with the A4. But I also want to be able to pass CA smog (albeit with a timely intake swap)

I was wondering if anyone would have an idea of how big a cam I can get away with in a setup like this and still pass the CA sniffer.

Thanks!

if you're building something smog legal......then build a total sleeper....
with those heads and some extra cubes....you can use a small but yet powerfull cam......I think CMS posted a cam on a earlier thread that idle almost stock but still produced over 440rwhp on a ls6 engine....with AFR 205's ......with the extra cubes...I'm sure you'll see 20-30 extra horses......

here is what they said: quoted: ALEX@CMS
"So currently you have a 220/230 cam w/ .440/.475 lift?

In My Opinion based on your current Combo i would recommend a 223/228 63X/63X 116+0. Makes great power through the RPM Range.

We had This cam in a CTS-V with AFR 205's and made 440whp idles like stock.
The limiting factor in your cam Selection is going to be your 2500 stall. If you want to go with a larger stall like a 3000-3300 stall you could go with a 231/234 cam and still have great drivability.

Both These cams are going to require a set of Dual Springs, and no need to worry about PTV clearances."

If you are going to want to pass smog you are going to need a wide LSA, Overlap adds to NOx and CO readings on the Sniffer Test.

It's been proven that a 224/228 with a Good tune will pass on a 346, Not to sure how much larger you can go on a 383, I'll let Ryne Chime in on that Since he has more Experience With what will and won't pass. Or you could put a 23x/23x cam and talk to whomever smogged Eric's car...lol....

Eric, was it here in SoCal? If so It's one of the largest cams I've Ever Heard of Passig the Sniffer. Whats the LSA on the cam?

Comp Cams is recommending their part # 54-444-11

Advertised: 273 intake 279 exhaust

@ .050 224 intake 230 exhaust 114º lobe separation

Lift .581 intake .588 exhaust

They're saying it should pass . . .

It Might....

Again it's all in the tune, and hopefully you'll have some HF cats, because without them it's going to be a a hell of a task.

Does your Smog guy do a Visual Inspection?

Hmm... maybe the 280/290 cam i was looking at will pass
