Default Can summer tired be used in cold temperatures

This may be a stupid question but can I use summer tires in the winter as long as I don't drive in snow?

You can, I've done it and even driven in snow. They turn into rocks do to the temp so you will feel the road more, and traction will suffer as well since they cannot get up to temp.

So you wont explode into a million pieces...

My NT555s are okay... as far as summer tires go they're not that aggressive though. I have driven them in light snow and it was sketchy but I made it. As long as there's no snow on the ground it's fine, just don't go nuts. They do feel 'lumpy' for a while before they get warmed up.

Drove my Nitto Drag Radials in cold temps. About as much grip as ball bearings, but no big deal otherwise.

Drove my NT555s in the snow last night was fine until I got caught at a light on the off ramp. Got a little sketch but got up the hill eventually.

Probably different for different summer tires. I drove my car with kumho spt tires day before yesterday. If I had to come to a stop, when I tried to get moving again the tires would just spin. It was very bad. At one point the trans shifted and the *** end just came around. Luckily I was on an empty road and only doing 20mph.

Decided not to drive it again until it warms up some.

Like other have said, it's OK to do but be very mindful of what you are doing.

It honestly feels like I have 500hp on NT555 315's on my exhaust only 95 Z.

EXPECT poor traction, drive accordingly. Even taking turns quickly the rear end walks out on you quickly.

I was between a rock and a hard place so I was forced to use these Nittos this winter. I also run two 60lb sand bags in the trunk

Some very soft summer tires can actually crack under cold temps. An in example of this is the tires that come on a new ZL1 Camaro the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G2. These have cracked and they are not covered under warranty.

The majority of summer tires do not crack under cold weather but do get hard and loose a lot of grip. You will have much reduced traction and grip.

I have found this to be true especially when pulling away after the car has been sitting. After a mile or two they warm up somewhat and it's not as bad. My experience has been with Riken Raptors and Nitto DRs.

I have been very impressed with my nitto 555's in the cold. Much better than I expected.
