Default Chrome Plated wheels......can the chrome be removed completely......how...?

I'm curious if I can have the chrome removed from a set of wheels that I have?

How?

Will they be perfectly smooth so they can be re-chromed properly....or powder coated?

I think it would be a fully manual process, like grinding down to the original aluminum (I assume). I am not sure if the surface would need to be polished again or for pre-plating it should be roughed up. Be careful powder coating as I've heard (if its high heat) it can affect the properties of the metal.

I read on some forums that a 15% solution of sulfuric acid and reverse electricity is what chrome shops use to strip chrome plating.

I'm waiting for a few shops locally to get back to me.
