Default protecting chrome?

I just got my new Cragars on (I'll get pics up as soon as the car's washed) When I got them mounted the guy who did it said I should give them a coat of wax.. just regular car wax (I use Mother's). I've never heard this before, of course I've only really had painted wheels. Anyway.. I don't want to wash the car until I've done this or whatever else I need to do to protect my wheels. They're chrome. Is this the proper way to protect them? Do I need to wax them before they get wet? Is this wax thing a bad idea? I really know nothing about it and I want to wash my damn car tonight but I don't want to screw anything up. Heeelp.

Yes, do your wheels like your cars paint. It will make them easier to clean and have some added protection.
