Depends on the tire. Each tire manufacturer will have a range of rim widths upon which you can safely mount each size/type of tire. You will have to go to the manufacturer's web sites to get this info.

FYI, the smallest recommended rim size for a 275mm tire is 9", at least in 275/40, 275/35, and 275/30.

But, I still would not recommend a 275 on a 8.5" rim. The tire manufactures list a minimum, and maximum wheel width for a good reason.

245/45ZR17 iis the PERFECT tire for that rim . . .

And a 275/40ZR17 DOES NOT fit a 8.5" wide wheel. 9" minimum.


I just do not get it WHY force too big a tire on too small a wheel . . . it does absolutely NOTHING to improve traction . . .
