Bah Humbug! Camaro SS Covered in Christmas Lights Shutdown by Wisconsin Police

Christmas Camaro

Points for creativity almost cost this teen points on his license. A state trooper issues warning to driver of the Christmas Camaro.

It is the most wonderful time of the year. To celebrate the holidays many folks, like to decorate their homes with festive lights on the outside. Of course, on the inside you are going to need a Christmas tree to complete the look. For some Camaro owners, they like to get their cars in on the decorating activities. 18-year-old, Tyler Kamholz of Oshkosh, Wisconsin is one of those Camaro owners. Although, his decorating activities landed him on the wrong side of the law recently.

As WLUK reported, Kamholz recently spent about 30 bucks on five strands of lights and draped them all over the outside of his Camaro SS. First of all, let us just say how cool it is for an 18-year-old to be riding around in a Camaro SS. Christmas lights or not, that would have been a dream car for a lot of us at that age. Also, like a lot of us that age, Kamholz soon found himself in a bit of hot water.

According to Wisconsin state law, drivers can only have white or amber colored lights on the front of a vehicle. On the rear, only the color red is allowed. Kamholz would have a tough time pleading ignorance. His father, Larry Kamholz is a retired police officer. “I knew exactly what laws were being broken with these types of lights,” said the elder Kamholz.

So where did the junior Kamholz come up with the idea? The same place that all teens come up with their ideas, YouTube. “At first, I saw it on a YouTube video from like five years ago, some people doing it,” said Kamholz. His father warned him of the trouble it could cause. However, to his credit he could see this was not exactly a felony offence and let his son have some fun while it lasted.

It lasted until about a week ago when a state trooper pulled Kamholz over in a mall parking lot. “She pretty much said she really liked the lights, but she’s pulling me over for the lights,” said Kamholz. Thankfully, the trooper had a sense of humor about it and let the driver go with just a warning. The trooper also took a picture and shared it on Facebook.

That photo kicked the holiday spirit into high gear. Kamholz got requests from nursing homes and neighborhood associations. They all want him to drive by with the lights to spread some Christmas cheer. That is the best part of this story. Nobody lost their minds over a small infraction. The driver, the dad and the trooper were all cool.

Yes, it is illegal, but it was all meant in good fun, and after this crazy year, we all need a smile once in a while. Perhaps next year he can wire the lights to his tach so they will change with the throttle position. He could have a sort of exterior shift light indictor. That would be fun. Not that we condone breaking any laws of course.
