FLASHBACK FRIDAY Z/28 Beats Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, ZL1 at Nürburgring

Not bad for a muscle car right?

GM released this video of the Z/28 devouring the Nürburgring. They managed to pull one over on Porsche, BMW, and even Audi on their home turf with a lap time of 7:37:47. Even the Lamborghini Murcielago would’ve gotten dusted.

There are a number of things to keep in mind here. First is that the Camaro was driving in less than optimal weather conditions. Part of the track was wet, and GM reckons they can squeeze a few more seconds out of their lap time in better weather. You can see the driver struggle a bit at various points on the track. At around 4:40 you can see the back end get out on him a little bit, but he corrects pretty easily.

Also, this car has a push-rod V8, a stick and rear-wheel drive. Not a dual-clutch doppelkuplungwhatever, not a high-tech torque vectoring AWD system, not twelve cylinders hand crafted by Italian artisans and blessed by the pope. This is just pure race car math. 500 something horsepower plus a relatively lightweight package equals fast.
