Ultra-rare Pontiac Trans Am GMMG Blackbird Year One Edition: Track Time Tuesday
Only eight examples of this beautiful piece of hi-po muscle were produced. And this Trans Am Blackbird is raring to fly.
One car that was born from pure American muscle is the Pontiac Trans Am. From 1967 to 2002, the Trans Am became a favorite among enthusiasts; and a true legend. While Pontiac rolled out some sweet special editions over the years; perhaps none is as bad, beautiful, and hard-to-find as the Trans Am GMMG Blackbird Year One Edition Blackbird.
This very limited edition was the brainchild of Pontiac dealer Carl Black. Black was looking to sell a beefed up Trans Am, and bring back the classic Pontiac muscle car, incorporating modern high-performance tech.
Black wanted more than an appearance package, so he turned to aftermarket tuner GMMG, run by Matt Murphy. GMMG was noted for their work with Camaros, so it was a perfect fit.
Subsequently, GMMG custom built a limited-run of Pontiac Trans Am Blackbirds, 50 built in total. Of that, the Trans Am GMMG Blackbird Year One Edition was limited to 8 cars.
Offered for sale at Mecum’s upcoming Las Vegas auction in November, this car was #3 of 8 built.
It’s got the prestige, but does it have the oomph? Oh yeah.
GMMG took a stock Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Ram Air with LS1 5.7 liter V8 engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and Hurst shift linkage. They added an engine package that turned out 380 horsepower and 400 ft-lb torque.
This brawny powertrain is capable of going 0 to 60 mph in just 4.40 seconds, and hitting the quarter mile in 12.87 seconds at 111 mph.
Other modifications include a Hurst short throw shifter with black shift ball, high flow carbon fiber air box lid with Year One Edition decal, chambered cat back exhaust, front and rear Eibach 1.5″ lowering springs, dimpled front and rear disc brake rotors, and American Racing 17 inch Torque Thrust wheels.
These cars are just so badass. The Trans Am Blackbird added the right kick of power. GMMG worked with the mantra: performance is key. An under-drive pulley system delivers horses to the rear. Dimpled rotors add more cooling to the 4 wheel disc brakes. Slightly lowered, the suspension improved handling and control.
Great looking with plenty of classic muscle cues; it includes hood accent stripes, Blackbird emblems and badging throughout, and Silver-faced gauges with Year One Logo on the dash.
With a retro vibe running throughout, the GMMG Blackbird Year One Edition added boosted technology, power, and handling to the Trans Am; and remains a rare muscle car find.
