Tonawanda is located just across the Niagara River in Buffalo, New York and consists of three engine plants: GM Powertrain Tonawanda Engine Plant #1, #4, and #5. These facilities assemble the LT1; LT4; EcoTec3 4.3L V6, 5.3L, and 6.2L V8s; and the EcoTec 2.0L Turbo and 2.5L.

In 2014, the plants were responsible for building 610,634 engines total and have produced 71,942,245 engines since it was opened in 1938. That’s a lot of engines for swaps in its 77-year history.

However, it was in 2010 that Tonawanda Engine was given $400-million for the new generation small block V8.
