World's First Electric COPO Camaro Fails to Sell at Monterey Auction

Auction house set the price between $425K and $525K, but the actual value of the Camaro was a guessing game.

Every year, Monterey, California is a site for a long list of exciting car events that draw large crowds every year during the month of August. One such an event is the Russo and Steele auction, that have a wide range of cars on the block for sale. Some are extremely unique, and some are extremely rare — the one thing they all have in common, though, is none of them are cheap. One of the cars that sat pretty on the auction block is the one and only eCOPO Camaro — the first ever all electric dragster Camaro. Even when looking and gawking at what the car has to offer, no one it home.

What makes the eCOPO Camaro so special is what makes it such a capable dragster. Instead of a high output and roaring V8, it comes with two electric motors that put an insane amount of horsepower to the wheels, and thus, earning a nine second run at any drag strip it ran at. Additionally, there’s only one of them in the world, and Chevy announced they were only ever going to make one. Therefore, the price was set between $425,000 and $525,000 according to Muscle Cars & Trucks. Russo and Steele supposedly told Fox that the actual value is difficult to pinpoint given the rarity, but, it’s shocking to see the eCOPO end up homeless. Especially knowing it’s faster than the Dodge Demon.

The eCOPO Camaro Concept offers an electrified vision of drag ra

CarBuzz thinks the one-of-a-kind dragster didn’t sell because of the fact that it was all electric. They claim the drag world isn’t ready for EV’s — insinuating that those who enjoy drag racing may prefer the screaming and ear splitting roar of gasoline engines as opposed to the lack of noise from electric motors. It’s a valuable theory, since the perfect drag equation involves loud cars that make loud burnouts. The eCOPO Camaro does in fact do burnouts, but that’s the only noise it would make on the line.

Regardless, we’re hopeful it finds a good home soon. Having a car that could get amazing gas mileage and also kick Demon butt on the strip is a dream come true. But, like the article said, maybe it was too far ahead of its time.
