a truckload less than the brand new rears, i also got what looks like a brand new torque arm, and low control arms......

it did go in easy, other than me and my buddy having a small issue with the torque arm lining up, but we got that solved fairly quickly and havent had the first problem since! i keep forgetting but i will get pics up as soon as i can

 

Did that rear come out of an F-body using a torque arm? That's the real question. If a 10 bolt can hold up to 10s in automatic transmission cars, I'm pretty sure the 8.8 could hold up to 9s. I've seen a couple torque arm mounts on 8.8s in F-bodies and wasn't too impressed; they just didn't look very "stout". Maybe yours is different though.

 

All true! Initially, the 8.8 looks like a budget solution to a 10 bolt, but after all is said and done its almost as expensive as a ready to go Moser 12 bolt.

 

shoot i picked up my 9 inch house and 3 member for only 150 bucks, just need axles, locker and my gear and ready to go!

 

I have seen cars run a 9 sec pass with a 1.7 60'. I am asking aboout a punishing launch (anything sub 1.5 60' starts to punish a rear).

My best 60' to date is a 1.52 with a stock 3.42 10 bolt. I question the integrity of the torque arm mount. hat is the weak link.

 

how often do you see a 9 sec car run 1.7s most of the ones were well under 1.7s

 

Most of the 8.8" rear would spin off the axle tubes and the ones that didn't do that would break the torque arm mount off. If yours is welded to your housing blown03mustang, then get ready to replace / repair it because IF it is welded it'll break.

It is not worth it to build an 8.8" for an F-body UNLESS you are doing it as a novalty or are incredible bored. I thought I could do it really fast. I spent way more making them than I thought I would and it took me 6 months for the first one. I had all the best tools (multiple state of the art machine shops) at my disposal and it still took a long time just to get it all finished.

Seriously guys, this isn't something that you're going to slap together in a weekend, and if you do it'll probably break. If it doesn't break right off the bat, there are some serious safety issues to consider. Aside from wearing out one tire too fast if it's fab'd crooked, there's the chance your brakes fail, the TA bracket fails, or an axle fails. Consider the cars that have been totaled from freak accidents when a 10-bolt breaks. I'm just saying... well, you could die.

Do what you want, but having been there and done that, do a budget 9" build. It'll save you time and money.

I have a 8.8 n my 01 TA T56 which sees 1.7 NA 60 fts and 1.4 n2o 60fts! I dont see ne cracks or wear on the rear or torque arm! I guess mine was built by a good fabricator!

 

I havent had one single weld failure yet so it can be done. One members car running 9's on it sub 1.4 60's three seasons strong now no issues whatsoever.

That said its a MAJOR chore to build these properly

 

lol, funny this came up. An old friend of mine was the first to do this...and I had the first one he built. I sold it to a buddy and it still is holding up in his DD.

He did have a few failures with the TA He made alot of design changes with the TA, and it probably would have held, but due to his laziness, went OOB. He could build one for around 1100. As cam said, though, it is a major chore to build one right.

In the end, get a 9" and be done.

 

Yeah I remember that. I was shocked out of my mind when I heard about someone else was doing 8.8 f-body builds and it was one of the reasons I first joined here to find out about it. I had great luck with the stock 8.8 in my 90 notch and the former J&P performance ( Two companies now they partnership split so its PSP and DaSilva racing now ) anyways they have run 8.8's into the 8's with no failures so I was convinced that this was the housing of choice. Forget about torque arm applications aside 12 bolt or not I swear the 8.8 is a better diff just comparing straight up say in a four link car I'd take the 8.8 over the 12 bolt anyday. So seeing as I had broken so many stock 10 and 9 bolts ( third gen diff ) I had a ton of motivation to build my first one but the two biggest were;

1. I like to build its what I do for fun. Driving isnt nearly as much pleasure for me as building something and making it work perfectly thats huge satisfaction for me. Besides... Its also just because I could ( I know go ahead throw tomatoes shameless self patting of back here haha )

2. Being in Canada and at the time a dollar exchange rate of 1.5-1 it would have cost me upwards of 5 grand back then by the time I got a 12 bolt or 9" shipped up here ( duty, freight, exchange etc. )

My original plan was to build one for me and perfect it and then sell some in my spare time but as it turned out with the massive workload involved its just not at all profitable to build them. PLUS I pulled a lot of favors to get my first one done but once it became about making dough free favors disappeared quickly and couple the excessive time for fab work and it was pretty much over for me before it began. I still build a few here and there I did 4 this year. I dont have an exact count on how many I've done but 20 something and not one failure or issue yet aside from a noisy gear set up on one but its not a fabrication issue its just **** house luck there I guess. I beat the living hell out of mine and I blew a Torsen T2R to itty bitty pieces last season but the housing has been fine for 4 years now and going strong. This is my original design too I build them much better now.

 

lets forget about strenghth for a second wich rear end has the least noise the moser 12 bolt with 4.11 is a pos for a daily driver it is just to loud.

 

8.8's are quiet. Mine is practically silent and all but one that I built have been very quiet and some completely silent

 

Then the 8.8 are not a good knock off of the 12 bolt if they are not annoying and screaming at you at 65 mph. May be GM should buy its rear ends from ford that seems to be the only thing ford has done right and gm should sell ford engines and then a mustang would be ok to. OR Hell just buy a dodge they have good rear ends and engines.

 

my 8.8 is dead quiet....after the gears in my mustang, the rear in it howled like a ****, but the 8.8 i dropped in my camaro has been suprisingly silent!

 

my friends nmra dragradial car runs low 8's at over 170mph with a 8.8 and 33 spline axels, so they are very stout and whisper quiet if setup right..
