Popped out of 5th, got stuck in 6th...
Popped out of 5th, got stuck in 6th... I bought a 2000 SS M6 the other day, maybe some have you seen my post about it. Anyways I picked it up for 7500, the kicker was that the old owner said he was driving home on the freeway in sixth and when he went to downshift it would not leave 6th, he then coasted it into a GM dealership and they got it out. Anyways driving it home it popped out of 5th on me several times. I didn't try 6th (a little spooked), 1-4 and reverse worked fine.
I just got done removing the trans/clutch. The clutch is shot (or close to it, what do you expect for 89k miles on stock clutch). The flywheel is glazed and there's barely any meat on the plate, but I wouldn't think that would cause the 5th and 6th gear symptoms. I'm probably going to take it to a local T56 shop here or send it to TDP. But I'd like to know if anyones had/seen similar symptoms in these trannys and what the issue turned out to be. My guess is the synchros but I'm not sure.

when you took your foot off the clutch did it throw it out of gear or does it get stuck? because my car would throw it out of gear and it was a simple fix. there was 2 bolts on the shifter that was hitting the shift stick so i just tighten them all the way and worked good as new.
The fork pads are cracked and junk at this point. The fork itself may be broken for 5-6.
There may be collateral damage to the synchro and 5th or 6th gears.
