They sell oil too, designed for the car. Not cheap either but if it really helps over the long haul on the car, it would be worth it.

I remember reading that article. If I had a real nasty motor and money I'd do it.

"So what oil do you run?"

"My own custom blend"

Chicks swoon in the distance.

fabulous article. this is exactly what caused me to switch to green. the dexcool chewed up my rubber seals in my waterpump and it was squeeking, squeeling and leaking like something awful. i was on the edge when i was thinking about going to green. i really didn't want to do it and i was really nervous to, but i feel a lot better now. green antifreeze FTW.

Kill Dexcool! I believe that stuff is the reason why I had to replace my waterpump at 55k miles.

i do. it regurgitates my problems exactly. i mean, these guys HATE dexcool. they hate it a lot more than i do. the problem they say dexcool causes was 100% my problem. again, it probably happens in 1-3% of the people that use it, but it's still a high margin when you compare it to green. by 100,000 miles, chances are you'll run into problems with your water pump regardless of the coolant you run. however, when dexcool trashes a water pump, it seems to do it very early, like before 40,000 miles. green coolant just doesn't seem to do this. like the article says, it's gentler on seals, plus it starts working immediately unlike dexcool.

again, GM doesn't denounce dexcool for a reason. they've spent so much time and money on it, do you know what the media would do to them if they went back on it? if GM suddenly came out and said "dexcool causes problems, so we're going to scrap it," the media would go nuts bashing GM as it always does to american car companies. they'll call them liars, thieves, and of course, american cars would be even bigger pieces of junk. GM can't go back on dexcool now, even though they're well aware of these problems.

it wouldn't be so bad if our water pumps were $25 like so many other cars. no, we have to buy a casting, too

A tech who works for my father has a 02 Grand Prix 3.8. He bought the car new and switched to green coolant after the first oil change. He's on the original intake and intake gaskets and the car has 168K on it that's almost unheard of.

I think this is something that I am going to do. After just doing a head gasket swap, everything has gotten exposed, which is what causes the issues with dexcool. I needed to pick up more antifreeze anyway since I had just topped off with DI water. Before people start screaming, the car is always garaged and never sits dormant in sub 50 degree weather.

Here's my question, is there a drain on the block to remove all the coolant? I'd like to remove as much first before I start to add ethylene glycol based antifreeze.

That's what I figured, now I just need to find them. Time to pull out the Helms manuals.

I was skeptical, but after reading this article and doing more research, I think the evidence is tilting against Dexcool. At least now we have a cogent theory: 2-EHA is a plasticizer and weakens gaskets and seals, rather than just assertions: Dexcool made my waterpump leak. Unfortunately, the conditions are not controlled, and we don't know to what extent other factors play a role, e.g. inferior or defective gaskets, etc.
