As opposed to what? It will sound the same regardless of where the rest of the box is located. As far as looks, using the T-top well will make it look like every other box in existence since the 3rd gen came into production back in the early 80's. So I'm pretty sure using the back seat area for the rest of the box is going to win as far as looks go. That's the way I'm leaning.

Don't forget, this is not a build page for my car, it's just a bunch of pics and ideas for everyone. I'll get to my car when I can, but I'm in no rush.

jason you have some awesome ideas, but if your health ain't so good take a break for a while, get youself back on track health wise, come up with some new ideas while you are doing that, then get back to work! Your health should always be a priority over your car! It's a tough pill to swallow, but after that nasty accident I had in February where I almost died from getting hit by the semi, I had to cut back on the amount of labor I did outside of work, I put myself in the hospital from running myself around trying to do all kinds of **** working full time, going to school full time, and trying to mod the **** out of my car, and a crazy girlfriend. I'm just now getting back to how healthy I was over a year ago, finally able to work out on a normal basis without getting sick, tinker with **** in the garage, and not feel like I've been hit by a train everyday!

Just worried about a fellow f-body bro!

I'm just trying to pace myself, but I have so many ideas and I want to do them all at once. I'll be OK as long as I don't let anyone pressure me into hurrying up, which sometimes happens.

Anyway, I did get my 3 subs.

I may whip up a quick MDF box to find out how they sound. There are 7 pieces as seen in the pic below, plus the 2 side pieces. So it shouldn't be that big a deal.

The 3 amps are next.

I simplified it to 6 pieces plus the 2 side pieces.

Can anyone figure out roughly the air space figuring 3/4" walls? I may try to divide it up into squares and triangles later, but I think it's at least 1 cu. ft. per driver.

I have to limit it to 37" wide to fit and still access the shock adjustors so the subs will be right next to each other. I haven't decided on a final angle to mount the subs at, but I'll do the sub mounting board first and then try to see what angle looks best.

I did get all the old tint off the back window using a small steam machine I bought a while back.

You really can't do it without one.

I wouldn't think the 3 would fit with only 37 inches. That would only leave you with 35.5'' to mount the subs

No, the back board would be 37" wide. It leaves me with .5" on the ends.

Here's a crude cardboard mockup just to get an idea of the size and shape.

What do you guys think?

Kind of ugly, huh?

Maybe with some rounded edges and covered in gray suede it will look a lot nicer.

Don't forget that the 54'' wide amp will be behind the seats. Like so:

I may just paint it the stock color as it matches the interior.

OK, I really didn't like the overall flow of that last box design. It looks way out of place with the smooth lines of the car. So I'm going back to something I really liked when I mocked it up.

It looks simple, but is actually very trick. I will raise the rear deck by a couple of inches if I need to, relocate the gas tank and build an enclosure in front of and underneath the deck. The top of the deck will be carpeted, but the majority will have a nice peice of stained wood acting like a mounting deck. The subs will be in the back and I'll have my 5 gallon air tank in front of them.

Probably this aluminum tank after chroming it. 6.5" diameter by 28.5" long and weighs just 7.3 pounds.

That should look real sweet. What do you guys think?

Here's an example of a chrome tank mounted in the back.

Looks great, huh?

about turning the gas tank around, under hard accel wouldnt there be a chance for the fuel to run away from the pickup?

Man, that was 6 months ago.
The advantage of it is less cost (new tank, pump, sending unit) as well as easy to install all the factory lines. The disadvantage is it takes up some of the storage area in the back.

As far as the pickup is concerned, do you know where the factory pickup is? It's not at the bottom. It's about half way down the slope. So in the factory position fuel runs away from it down hill. If you swap it around the fuel will run away from it uphill. I doubt there would be much difference. I don't run the fuel level down real low anyway.

I looked through some of my gas tank pics (race car stuff) and I think I have a pretty good idea here.

First, I'll have a custom tank made to fit this area.

Then I can save a lot of money by reusing the stock pump/sending unit. It can be added to the new tank like these guys did it.

I like this idea as it uses otherwise wasted space where the muffler used to be and it doesn't take up any room from the storage area. Guys really will be scratching their heads wondering how I did that.

If I could figure out how to run 2 fuel tanks like the vettes it would open up some new configurations. I think I could run the stock sender/pump in one of the tanks (divided by the driveshaft tunnel) and then connect the other tank to it with a line from the bottom and a line at the top. Like so:

Then I could do these:

This particular setup is real nice because if you flip the subs cone up the whole thing is pretty stealthy. Then when you really want to show off, flip the subs cone down. I think this is my favorite.

Just an update, I'm basically at a standstill at the moment. It's only after I get my new engine in and it's running that I can get back to the fun stuff. I wanna get the air bags for the front so bad. Replacing the rear suspension is also high on my list. The thunderbird IRS is going to affect a lot of things so I wanna get it done pretty quick. Here is an excellent link that shows the same IRS being installed in a pickup truck.
http://team321.com/truckirs/truckirs.html

I also came up with a new idea for the subwoofer box with the priorities being high sound quality, efficient output and a low center of gravity.

What do you guys think of that box? Big, huh?

I also still plan to make the one large amplifier from three smaller ones as well as have a chrome plated air tank.
