Yup, go by the dipstick. Technically takes 5.5, but I always ran 6.

G.M. book reads; use 5.5 quarts with the smaller filter, and 6 with the truck, or larger filter.

I know in my 2001 I tried 5.5 quarts with the AC Delco P46E filter (stock filter size) and it was a 1/2 quart low so I added the other 1/2 quart. I don't think all LS1's are 5.5 quarts by the book, for some odd reason mine takes 6 to read correctly. It may just be bad dipstick reading in some cars?
